On July 21, 2026, Kaylee Hottle passed away — the young deaf actress who won the hearts of audiences worldwide bringing to life Jia, the girl who communicated with King Kong in sign language in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and its sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). She was 18.
The news has shaken both Hollywood and the international Deaf community. It is a good moment to get to know her better: who she was, where she came from, and why the way she showed up on screen mattered so much.

A four-generation Deaf family
Kaylee Hottle was born in 2007, in Atlanta, Georgia, although she grew up in Austin, Texas. She was deaf, just like her parents, grandparents, and many other relatives on her father's side: deafness had been part of her family for four generations. She grew up, then, in a home where American Sign Language (ASL) was not a language she had to learn, but her mother tongue — the one she absorbed from the cradle. That naturalness is, probably, the key to everything that came afterward.
Before reaching the big screen, Kaylee had already appeared on camera in small commercial projects, including a 2017 ad for Convo, a sign language video-interpreting app. It was precisely that commercial that, without her knowing it, would change her life.
From a video-interpreting ad to Hollywood
When the casting team for Godzilla vs. Kong was looking for a real deaf girl to play Jia, an assistant director remembered seeing Kaylee in that Convo commercial and recommended her to the casting director. The production had been clear from the start that Jia had to be played by a deaf actress, and that lead ended up bringing Kaylee, with no prior film experience, directly to the casting process of one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.
Kaylee played Jia, the sole survivor of the Iwi tribe of Skull Island, an orphaned girl who develops a deep bond with Kong through sign language. In the film, even Kong himself learns some signs to communicate with her.
The release of Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021 turned Jia into one of the most beloved characters of the MonsterVerse. Critics and audiences especially praised the sensitivity with which Kaylee built the character, and how organically sign language entered the film without feeling forced or "explained" for hearing audiences. The authentic representation of sign language worked just as one would hope.
The film's success brought her back to play Jia again in 2024, this time in a more central role, in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, where she shared the screen with names like Alexander Skarsgård and Millie Bobby Brown. She also had a small role in an episode of the series Magnum P.I.
An advocate for deaf characters being played by deaf actors
Beyond the character itself, Kaylee understood very early on the symbolic weight of what she was doing. In several interviews she argued that deaf characters' roles should be in the hands of deaf actors and actresses, something we too have argued for many times on Excepcionales.

Aware that opportunities for deaf actors and actresses remain scarce in the major film industry, Kaylee also spoke often about the responsibility she felt as a role model for other deaf girls and boys who dream of acting.
I'd like to see more deaf girls feel inspired when they see me on screen and think that they too can have a chance in Hollywood (Kaylee Hottle, 2024).
What is known about her death
Kaylee Hottle died in the early hours of Tuesday, July 21, 2026, in Ijamsville, a community in the state of Maryland. According to the county Sheriff's Office, the vehicle she was riding in as a passenger went off the road on Windsor Road and struck a culvert. The driver was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and another person in the car declined medical treatment. Authorities noted that excessive speed may have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. The news was made public by her father, Joshua Hottle, in a video in American Sign Language posted on his social media.
The news set off a wave of heartfelt messages from the international Deaf community. Alaqua Cox (widely known for her starring role in the Marvel streaming series Echo), wrote on Instagram that she was heartbroken and offered her condolences to the family. Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur, both Oscar winners, also shared public messages of mourning.
Kaylee Hottle leaves behind a short filmography but a huge legacy: having shown, with such natural ease, that sign language can carry a lead character at the heart of a Hollywood blockbuster. Rest in peace.
